Aged Care Menu Reviews by Accredited Practising Dietitians

Annual dietitian menu reviews are now a requirement for residential aged care homes and for providers delivering meals under government-funded aged care packages, including Support at Home. NutriBlooms’ team of Accredited Practising Dietitians conducts thorough, practical menu and mealtime reviews for aged care, respite and community meal providers — on-site across Melbourne, or remotely Australia-wide.

Every review is delivered with a clear written report, practical recommendations, and an agreed improvement pathway your team can act on straight away. Call us on 0431 189 792 or enquire by email for a tailored quote.

Annual Menu Reviews Are Now a Requirement

Since the new Aged Care Act and the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards took effect on 1 November 2025, dietitian-led menu review is no longer optional for many providers:

✓ Residential aged care homes — under Standard 6 (Food and Nutrition), menus must be reviewed at least annually through a menu and mealtime assessment completed by an Accredited Practising Dietitian. See the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s Standard 6 guidance.

✓ In-home and community meal providers — providers delivering meals, snacks and drinks under funded aged care packages, including the Support at Home program, must have a dietitian assess those meals at least annually. See the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s food and nutrition regulation page.

Beyond the annual requirement, many providers choose an optional six-month review to keep seasonal menu changes on track and maintain documentation between annual assessments.

A note on compliance: a dietitian menu review supports your organisation to meet its food and nutrition obligations and provides documented evidence of dietitian input for audits and quality assessments. Accreditation and regulatory outcomes remain the responsibility of each provider and the relevant regulator.

What’s Included in a NutriBlooms Menu Review

Every review is tailored to your setting, your menu cycle and your residents’ or clients’ needs. Depending on the format you choose, your review can include:

✓ Full menu cycle review against current nutritional standards, guidelines and evidence-based practice
✓ Nutritional analysis of menus, recipes and portion sizes
✓ Review of recipes, ingredients, cooking methods and menu variety
✓ Kitchen and dining walk-through (on-site reviews)
✓ Interviews with kitchen, catering and care staff
✓ Mealtime observation, including presentation, temperature and the dining experience (on-site reviews)
✓ Review of texture-modified menus against the IDDSI framework
✓ Review of hydration practices and drink availability
✓ Consideration of resident and client feedback in menu planning

What You Receive

Following your review, you’ll receive a clear written report with practical, prioritised recommendations — not a box-ticking exercise. Your report sets out what’s working well, where improvements can be made, and a defined improvement pathway with agreed priorities, practical objectives and next steps, so your kitchen and care teams know exactly what to act on and in what order.

✓ Written menu review report — documented dietitian assessment you can present at audit
✓ Prioritised, practical recommendations — tailored to your kitchen, budget and residents
✓ Optional six-month follow-up review — to track progress between annual assessments
✓ Staff education and training — available for kitchen, catering and care teams on request

On-Site Across Melbourne, Remote Australia-Wide

Government guidance recommends on-site assessment where possible, so the dietitian can assess taste, texture, presentation, aroma and cooking methods first-hand. With clinics in Blackburn, Ringwood, Lilydale, Dandenong South, Roxburgh Park and Epping/Lalor, our dietitians conduct on-site menu reviews across metropolitan Melbourne.

For providers outside Melbourne, or where an on-site visit isn’t practical, we offer remote menu reviews Australia-wide — assessing your menus, recipes, portion sizes, cooking methods, photos and client feedback in line with the government’s remote assessment guidance.

Why Choose NutriBlooms for Your Menu Review

Your review is completed by our team of Accredited Practising Dietitians — a Melbourne-based clinic team, not a faceless national panel. Because we work as one team, your reviewing dietitian has built-in peer support: complex questions, such as texture-modified menus for clients with swallowing difficulties or specialised dietary needs, can be case-conferenced within the clinic, including with our Principal Dietitian.

NutriBlooms is also a registered NDIS provider, and our team works day-to-day across aged care, home care, disability and paediatric nutrition — so recommendations are grounded in real clinical practice, personalised to your setting, and written in plain language your staff can use.

Menu Review FAQs

How often do aged care menus need to be reviewed by a dietitian?

At least annually. Under the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, residential aged care menus must be reviewed at least once a year through a menu and mealtime assessment by an Accredited Practising Dietitian, and providers delivering meals under funded in-home aged care packages must also have a dietitian assess their meals, snacks and drinks at least annually. Many providers add an optional six-month review to stay on top of seasonal menu changes.

What does the dietitian assess during a menu review?

Your dietitian reviews the full menu cycle against current nutritional standards and guidelines, analyses recipes and portion sizes, and looks at variety, choice and suitability for specialised dietary needs — including texture-modified menus against the IDDSI framework and hydration practices. On-site reviews also include a kitchen and dining walk-through, staff interviews and mealtime observation.

Can the menu review be done remotely?

Yes. Government guidance recommends on-site assessment where possible, and we provide on-site reviews across metropolitan Melbourne. For providers elsewhere in Australia, or where a site visit isn’t practical, we conduct remote reviews using your menus, recipes, portion information, cooking methods, photos and client feedback.

What do we receive after the review?

A written report with a documented dietitian assessment of your menu and prioritised, practical recommendations, plus an agreed improvement pathway with clear next steps. An optional six-month follow-up review and staff education or training sessions are also available if you’d like ongoing support.

How much does a menu review cost, and how do we get started?

Every organisation’s menu cycle, size and setting is different, so we quote each review individually. Call us on 0431 189 792 or email info@nutriblooms.com.au with your setting, location and menu cycle details, and we’ll come back to you with a tailored quote.
